Game over, democracy? How tech monopolies are destroying free media – and how to save democracy

About the event

From at least the time of Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and his alliance with Trump, it has become clear how extensively individuals and companies can control digital platforms. These platforms concentrate the majority of digital attention, with a handful of US tech corporations dominating the web.

As a consequence of monopolisation, these platforms are economically starving journalism and editorial offices, which have been losing their financial foundation for years. Furthermore, they are increasingly controlling the political public sphere.

Are these digital monopolies—bringing ever larger parts of our lives under their control, dominating political opinion formation, and simultaneously undermining our free market economy—actually legal?

In this keynote, Martin Andree presents research that quantifies the exact degree of monopolisation based on real usage measurements.

He will also share a set of measures to curb the dominance of digital corporations and reopen European digital media to diversity and competition.
