On disinformation – and on how we fight it

About the event

Disinformation is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, influencing public opinion, undermining democratic institutions, and shaping narratives in ways that can be difficult to counter.

In this short presentation, Sophia Eriksson Waterschoot, Deputy Director-General for Communication at the European Commission, will provide an insightful overview of the current landscape of disinformation and the measures being taken at the EU level to combat it. Drawing from her extensive experience in EU policy and strategic communication, Sophia will shed light on the key strategies and initiatives aimed at strengthening media resilience, tackling online manipulation, and ensuring that citizens have access to reliable, fact-based information.

She will also discuss the role of EU institutions, media actors, and civil society in the fight against disinformation. In addition to her work in communication, Sophia is also Director for Youth, Education, and Erasmus+ at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, where she plays a pivotal role in shaping EU policies on education and youth engagement.
