Aphra Kerr

Aphra Kerr is Full Professor of Digital Media & Communication and a senior adviser at the UCD Centre for Digital Policy. She is an adjunct Professor of Sociology at Maynooth University and a PI at the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre for AI and Digital Content Technology. She has previously held positions as Professor of Sociology at Maynooth University (2005-2024), Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Media Research at the University of Ulster (2004-2005), and Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Lecturer at Centre for Society, Technology and Media and the School of Communications at Dublin City University (2000-2004). She has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Edinburgh (UK, 2019), the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania (USA, 2011) and at the Institute for New Technologies at the United Nations University, Maastricht (Netherlands, 1996). She was a Government of Ireland Post-Doctoral Fellow (IRCHSS) based at the Centre for Society, Technology and Media, Dublin City University from 2001-2003.

Aphra is the author of two monographs on digital games: ‘Global Games: Production, Circulation and Policy in the Digital Games Industry’ (Routledge, 2017) and ‘The Business and Culture of Digital Games: Gamework/Gameplay’ (Sage, 2006). She was associate editor of the Digital Communication and Society three volume encyclopaedia (Wiley-Blackwell-ICA 2015), and has published over 80 peer-reviewed publications.

She is currently working on a number of funded research projects on AI ethics and governance, algorithmic literacy, media power, digital games/gaming, and algorithmic literacy.
