Carien J. Touwen is a senior lecturer and coordinator of international relations and education at the School of Journalism in Utrecht (part of the HU University of Applied Sciences).

In addition to her academic role, she previously worked as a freelance environmental journalist and, more recently, as an education consultant and auditor for higher education institutes in the Netherlands, with a particular focus on international education.  She also serves as a Board Member of the European Journalism Training Association and is programme manager of EUfactcheck.eu.

Carien’s academic background lies in geography, African studies, and foreign reporting.
