For years, Italy has been the gateway to Europe for thousands of migrants fleeing wars, persecution, or seeking a better life. Yet the dream of a “promised land” often collides with exploitation, suffering, and tragedy. Among these stories is that of Alla F. Hamad Abdelkarim, a former Libyan footballer sentenced in Italy to 30 years for manslaughter and human trafficking. On August 17, 2015, he arrived aboard a boat where 49 people suffocated to death, accused of being part of the crew and the criminal network behind the journey. The reportage by Raffaele Marco Della Monica and Raffaele Manco retraces this case, exploring doubts surrounding the verdict and the fight for a retrial.
