They blew her up
About the event
On 16 October 2017, Malta is shaken by a brutal murder. Daphne Caruana Galizia, a Maltese journalist and anti-corruption activist, is killed by a car bomb. A rich businessman is charged with ordering her murder, but suspicions arise that he is protected by top politicians.
All throughout her years of writing, Daphne had received threats and had been the target of several forms of harassment because of her journalism. Her house was set on fire twice, and three of her family dogs were killed. Yet Daphne persevered and dedicated her life to her work, specially the Panama Papers. This play shines a light on her story and the crucial role of independent journalism.
For They Blew Her Up Herman Grech, writer and editor-in-chief of the newspaper Times of Malta, spoke to some of the main people involved to go straight into the heart of the case. The result is this captivating work of fiction, based on the dramatic court case and interviews.
