AI between practice and power

About the event

This workshop explores AI from two journalistic angles: practice and power. It starts with practical AI tools that journalists can use to work more efficiently. It then turns to investigative approaches for reporting on how AI systems are deployed, regulated, and contested, and what this means for society and the environment.

1st part: AI in journalism: Can newsrooms do better through collaboration?
Juan Carlos Lopez Calvet Director of Data & AI, Schibsted News Media

In this hands-on workshop, Schibsted Media will take participants inside their newsroom to demonstrate how AI is already being used across reporting, editing, and audience engagement. The session will showcase concrete tools, workflows, and in-house experiments — from story discovery and verification to editing support and audience optimisation. Designed as a practical and interactive session, this workshop is aimed at journalists, editors, and technologists who want actionable insights into how AI can be integrated responsibly, transparently, and effectively into everyday newsroom practice.

2nd part: Inside AI: Investigating Systems, Finding the Story
Nico Schmidt, Investigative Journalist, Pulitzer Center AI Accountability Fellow

AI is increasingly influencing both how journalism is made and what journalists cover. This workshop takes an investigative approach to AI systems deployed by public and private actors, with a focus on how they work, where they are used, and what risks and accountability gaps they create. Participants will leave with practical methods for finding leads and identifying the stories that matter behind the technology.
