Il primo documentario a ricostruire la verità giudiziaria dietro il rapimento, la tortura e l’omicidio del ricercatore italiano, il cui corpo fu rinvenuto fuori dal Cairo il 3 febbraio 2016. Per la prima volta, la storia di Giulio viene raccontata attraverso le voci dei suoi genitori, Claudio Regeni e Paola Deffendi — un padre e una madre che hanno sfidato la dittatura militare di Abdel Fattah al-Sisi nella loro instancabile ricerca della verità. A loro si unisce Alessandra Ballerini, l’avvocata che è stata al loro fianco durante anni di battaglia legale, una lotta culminata nel 2023 con il processo a quattro agenti della Sicurezza Nazionale egiziana. Il processo è iniziato nella primavera del 2024 ed è previsto che giunga a conclusione entro la fine del 2026.

A talk will follow the screening, featuring the Regeni’s family lawyer, Alessandra Ballerini, and Emanuele Cava, author of the documentary, who will connect online. Moderated by Dimitri Bettoni (Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa).

The first documentary to piece together the judicial truth behind the kidnapping, torture, and murder of the Italian researcher, whose body was discovered outside Cairo on February 3, 2016. For the first time, Giulio’s story is told through the voices of his parents, Claudio Regeni and Paola Deffendi — a mother and father who took on the military dictatorship of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in their relentless pursuit of the truth. They are joined by Alessandra Ballerini, the lawyer who stood beside them through years of legal struggle, a battle that culminated in 2023 with the trial of four agents from Egypt’s National Security. That trial began in the spring of 2024 and is scheduled to reach its conclusion by the end of 2026.
