Alessandro Giannì
Alessandro Giannì was born in Salemi (Trapani) on September 11, 1961. In 1984, he graduated from Pisa University with a degree in Biological Sciences, where he later obtained a PhD in Evolutionary Biology.
From 1993 to 1998, he was first responsible for Greenpeace Italy’s Fishing Campaign (against illegal fishing, especially drift nets or “spadare”) and then for the Biodiversity Campaign dealing with GMOs. In 1999, he worked for Greenpeace International, contributing to the definitive ban on drift nets in the EU.
Subsequently, from 2000 to 2005, he was an expert at the Technical Secretariat for Protected Areas and the Technical Secretariat for Marine Protected Areas of the DG Nature Protection of the Ministry of the Environment, where he dealt mainly with EU and international issues of biodiversity and biosafety (GMOs).
He was then head of Greenpeace Italy’s Sea Campaign from February 2006 to January 2009 (working in particular on marine protected areas, bluefin tuna fishing, and against the exploitation of offshore hydrocarbon deposits).
From February 2009 to June 2024, he was Director of Campaigns for Greenpeace Italy, and since July 1, 2024, he has been Head of Institutional and Scientific Relations for Greenpeace Italy.
