Cause of death: border. A collective listening experience
About the event
Step away from the constant visual distractions of daily life and immerse yourself in an intimate collective listening session. This experimental journalistic format, led by Barbara Matejčić, invites festival participants to slow down, reflect, and engage with powerful storytelling in a unique way.
Together, participants will listen to a gripping radio documentary that recounts the deeply human stories of individuals whose lives tragically ended along migrant routes. These narratives shine a light on the personal struggles and systemic challenges that define migration today.
Following the listening session, Barbara Matejčić and her guests will engage in a meaningful conversation, offering behind-the-scenes insights into the creation of the documentary and discussing the broader implications of these untold stories.
About the documentary
The documentary takes the audience along the so-called Balkan route, following the traces of those who died along the way trying to get protection in the European Union. In the nineties, these were people fleeing wars in the former Yugoslavia. Today they are non-European refugees. An invisible network of people has woven around their deaths who do all that institutions should. Thus, in cemeteries in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, we meet activists who search for the missing and the dead, try to identify them, pass on information to their families and mark their final resting places with dignity. We also get to know the families of the deceased, who mourn thousands of kilometers away and blame the border regime of Fortress Europe. The documentary “Cause of Death: The Border” was selected for the most prestigious European radio and television festival, Prix Europe 2024.
