Dušan Miljuš
Dušan Miljuš is a Croatian journalist and former editor-in-chief of the daily Jutarnji List who, in 2008, was brutally attacked outside his home by unknown assailants wielding baseball bats. They broke his arm, and he also suffered a concussion. Even before the attack, he had received hate mail, and a competing newspaper went so far as to publish his obituary. The motive behind the threats and assault can only be speculated upon: his investigative articles on arms smuggling between the European Union and the former Yugoslav states, as well as his reporting on Mafia involvement in Croatia’s municipal construction industry. Miljuš did not stay silent—he publicly named those he believed to be responsible. In Croatia, he has become a symbol of courageous journalism.
