Bastian Greshake Tzovaras is a Senior Researcher within the Tools, Practices, Systems programme of the Alan Turing Institute in London, the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. His work centers around citizen science, particularly on how open source and open science technologies can be used to empower individuals and communities to engage in their own knowledge production. He does so by bringing together both applied and theoretical methods from computer/data science, human-computer-interaction, and critical science and technology studies. Bastian has a background at the intersection of biology and computer science, holding a Master’s degree in Ecology and Evolution and a PhD in bioinformatics from the University of Frankfurt.

He started his citizen science journey in 2011 as the co-founder of openSNP – an open data repository for crowdsourcing genetic data – and continued it by joining the Berkeley National Laboratory in California as a visiting scholar following his PhD. Between 2019 and 2022, he led the Peer-Produced Research Lab at Université Paris Cité, where he and his team worked on how to enable the co-creation of citizen science projects.
