Andrea Backhaus is an independent journalist and reporter from Germany specialised in war and conflict. She lived in Egypt and Lebanon for several years and has done extensive coverage of the Middle East and North Africa, particularly the upheaval in Egypt and the war in Syria. Most recently, she worked on the war in Ukraine and has reported from Israel and the Westbank. Over the years she has been nominated for several journalism awards, among them the prestigious Kurt Schork Awards in International Journalism. Last year, she clinched a finalist position for the Peter Scholl-Latour Award for conflict reporting. As a speaker and moderator, she addresses challenges in conflict reporting such as safety risks, hate speech, and mental health.
